Curtains on Purim
The duke has a very expensive set of curtains which are discovered missing. A search of the Jewish quarter reveals them in the home of the prominent Enoch. Enoch is jailed, questioned, and threatened, but he refuses to reveal how he came by the curtains. The future of the Jewish community is at stake. Enoch has a dream of the Maharal who tells him that all will be well. At Enoch’s trial, Johann, the chief advisor to the duke, admits that it was he that used the curtains as collateral for a loan. He had planned on letting Enoch take the blame so his death would free him of his debt. His confession was forced by a nightmare he had of the Maharal, threatening to send his golem to exact vengeance unless he told the truth. The Jewish community celebrated that date as “Purim of the Curtains” for years to come.
